Operation Hero Program

This nationwide ASYMCA program provides after school mentoring and tutoring to elementary-aged children, and Camp Pendleton ASYMCA serves the largest number of students nationally. Operation Hero is offered at all five Camp Pendleton elementary schools, and this program is free of charge. The Camp Pendleton ASYMCA Operation Hero Facilitators are credentialed teachers and most are also military family members so they are well equipped to lead this program.
Operation Hero is designed to address challenges faced by many Camp Pendleton children that include:
  • feelings of isolation in a new or even old surroundings· feelings of self-doubt or low self esteem
  • frequent or long-term deployments by one or both parents
  • academic difficulties due to frequent moves
The program targets children in grades kindergarten through eight who are experiencing temporary challenges in school and/or academically or socially. Operation Hero is able to provide children with more one-on-one time through the low 8:1 facilitator/student ratio, and we believe the low ratio is the key to its success.
